PostSubject: Greetings from England!   Greetings from England! Icon_minitimeMon Aug 05, 2013 7:50 am

Hello all! I'm an English (GMT, CEST-1 just in case you wanna know) SFA player who merely stumbled upon a certain guide on gameFAQs which really piqued my interest. A couple of days previous I was playing some SFA and thought to myself how cool it would be if it was a competitive game. As a fan of other competitive games such as Dota 2 and SSBM, not to mention SSFIV and Quake Live, seeing one of my favourite GCN games make it as a competitive game would be a dream come true, especially because I believe Assault really is criminally underrated and underappreciated.

So I searched for the author of said guide and wound up here, so there you go.

Anyway, enough stories. I've played Assault for a few years now but never gotten into the multiplayer until very recently, as far too many of my friends deem the Gamecube controller 'un-usable' due to their Xbox and PS3 usage, so I rarely played the multiplayer. Now, though, I feel frustrated that not enough people get the chance to play it with me as I am seriously enjoying it Because of this long time spent ignoring the multiplayer my skills are total crap to say the least, but my time spent watching Quake Live and playing TF2, as well as other competitive games gives me some semblance of understanding the genre's common conventions and niches at a higher level.

Now, about myself. I'm a 17-year old student who loves to talk. Ranting is a pastime I enjoy too much, to be honest. I'm an amateur actor and director who enjoys making movies, but my major hobby is obviously gaming. I'm involved in a small amateur Dota 2 team, I've won a few small SSBB competitions (and came pretty close in a big one), but I prefer Melee. I was even into RTS games like Dawn of War 2 (basically a clone of Starcraft) for a while, but that interest has faded and replaced with a need for action, which is why I want Assault to get big.

I've also gotten into collecting retro consoles recently. At the moment I only have one (a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis) but next on my list to get is a SNES, then an Atari 2600 and an N64 to relive some classic Banjo Kazooie memories.

My favourite games would be:
-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-Super Smash Bros. Melee
-Pokémon Ruby
-Super Mario Galaxy 2
-SSX 3 (Highly recommended to all GCN owners, this game got me into snowboarding)
-Starfox Adventures (this and Wind Waker are my favourite GCN Zelda games)
-Metroid Prime
-Timesplitters 2 (buy this game)
-Zelda: Twilight Princess
-Sonic Adventure DX

I should think that's more than enough information about me. Right? Anyway, thanks for reading and I look forward to seeing some great Star Fox Assault games played on the big screens in the future.

hey and welcome! believe me, your dreams of big-time SFA are shared by many here, me included. all the same i can't pretend it isn't a little slow around here at the moment as we just lost our old forum (actually, i'm glad you were able to find this one, all the links in my guide and whatnot are way outdated now, i guess!) but hey, we do what we can

so you're a QL fan, huh? that's pretty cool; i've been hoping some fans of more competitive FPS games would eventually show up here. i'm a Quake player as well but my favourite incarnation of the game is probably CPMA. i've also got quite a few TF2 hours logged

anyway, glad to see you here, and really hope you stick around. we can always do with more discussion around here and a contributor who's already versed in competitive strategy and the like is very much appreciated!

Thanks very much for the warm reception! I can already tell I'm gonna like this place. Anyway, I actually forgot to add a little thing about my playstyle in the game, so here you go:

As Falco is my main in Melee and after a few games played as Wolf (before I learned he was banned) I decided that I preferred the agility of Falco to be more of a consistent annoyance rather than a flat-out man-fighter who gives no thought to damage taken as long as the kill happens, such as Slippy.

This means that I normally find larger maps such as Corneria and Aparoid Homeworld easier to play on as, despite the lack of weapons around the outskirts of these maps, I find my harass paying off a little more by annoying players with consistent prods and pokes at their life, before they make a slight mistake. This 'punishing' playstyle is very similar to how I play Street Fighter (as Sagat).

So that's how I like to play. Of course, I've never played against real good opponents, as the only person I can play often is my sister who prefers to do other things anyway. However this 'punishing' strategy seems to work pretty well against her and from experience in other games I know that unprepared enemies suffer hugely against this, but those with experience against this strategy will find it easy to counter.

Anyway, as my area of expertise for Assault is less focused on the characters/classes I'll be posting a quick analysis of a stage or two later today. I don't know which one, as of yet, but I hope it can help bring some useful insight into how each stage was designed to be played.

i'd very much like to see some vids of a playstyle like that. we don't have many players that really go for pokes and constant harass games with the possible exception of Akp and/or Yosh, and watching how people play has always been pretty interesting to me

You're game choices are good and similar to mine, most of the games you listed I beat multiple times. And SSBM is  a game I play in tournaments around Ohio quite often. It's the only game I like more than SFA. I'm a fox main and I always have a good match against Falco (in both games). Can you SHFFL (SHB) in SSBM?

Thanks man! And yeah, i can SHFFL, but admittedly my weakness is the L-canceling. As a Falco player who relies on spikes you'd think I'd be good at it, but I'm not. Otherwise, I like to think I'm pretty good.

EDIT: You would not have a good match against my Falco, believe me. 2 mins and I'll be 3 kills down, most likely.

Oh, L-canceling is hard at first but it's much easier if you fast fall into it. My complex with falco is jump canceling shines and short hopping into A attacks, since my controller some what fails and im used to Fox's quicker shines.

I am a SSBB player myself, so L-canceling doesn't exist for me. and I have a R.O.B. main. He can meteor smash like no other...

Anyways, welcome to the forums! You are probably the most distant of all players from the "center" of the league, (Vancouver, Canada) although wasn't someone in the old forum from New Zealand?

Totally late, but welcome to the forum. I'm pleasantly surprised that activity here has sped up a bit.
