Star Fox Wii U - Potential Assault Sequel? Empty

So with E3 this year comes the big news that Miyamoto is personally supervising creation of a new Star Fox, and a teaser video and image have been released showing off some basics of the game. A demo was also playable on the E3 show floor.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

As of right now the game is in pre-alpha with the expected release window of late 2015, however Miyamoto has said he has considered bringing in a second-party developer to help finish the game a little quicker. "This is a game that we've developed internally up until now, but because we do want to bring this to market very soon, we are looking at some potential partner companies that we can team up with," he said.

This quote is the object of focus here: Namco have just confirmed a Pac-Man game exclusively for Wii U, and there is the news that Pac-Man will be in SSB4. Therefore there is a high possibility that Nintendo might hand secondary development to Namco, and that could mean a sequel to Assault... and that would be the biggest news this site has ever had.

Wii U's online capabilities will mean that LAN tourneys aren't the only opportunities to play against your fellow Revoleague players, and after the huge build-up to this game there is a high chance that many players would seek out more competition.

To stretch this dream even further into the realms of near-impossibility, the Smash Bros. Invitational last night was a huge success and during the later roundtable discussion, Sakurai answered that while he will not be personally responsible for further official tourneys there is definitely the possibility of more. If the competitive response to Star Fox Wii U was significant enough, well...

So there's potential here for a huge resurgence in competitive Star Fox. What are your thoughts on the game, and the possibility for a sequel to Assault?

dang, i'd really like to believe the multiplayer for any potential upcoming SF game would be as great as SFA...

as i see it there are 3 possibilities:

- game is made with as much competitive potential as SFA
- game is made with very fun multiplayer but not with the same mechanics as SFA
- game is made with throwaway multiplayer or no multi at all

overall i think the second option is the most likely; Nintendo is very much about social gaming these days but their competitive efforts (such as they are) are left almost entirely to SSB...

i'd probably be okay with that outcome anyway. honestly, if it's fun i'll play it, but i won't /compete/ in it if it's not on the same level as SFA

I really hope it turns out as the first option. Splatoon's announcement as a direct competitive online multiplayer game is a step in the right direction for introducing a more mature market to the Wii U's social gaming, and I believe that if it turns out a success then we might have a winner on our hands.

yeah, i mean they must be realizing by now that by including some more competitive titles they'll not be losing any money... it definitely could happen. the main problem i've always seen is that SF is thought of primarily as an arcade-style shooter and not as a third-person shooter, so the development of any multiplayer is likely to be centered around dogfights and not ground-based combat

regardless, if they manage to innovate and develop a flight-based competitive SF game with as much depth and intricacy... hell yeah, sign me up! the fact that vehicles are so out of the realm of possibility in competitive SFA has always really bugged me and i think it'd be fun to see something different - if that's the case, it probably won't ever replace SFA for me, but it'd be a cool alternative.

E: who am i kidding, nothing will ever replace SFA for me  bounce

UPDATE

The following image was just posted to the Miiverse thread for Sakurai's updates on Smash Bros 4:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

With the following comment:
"Here's the Great Fox from Star Fox: Assault. I wonder what missions it will conduct. It'll probably have fighters running around on top of it without the pilot's consent."

It's a stretch to imagine that this is any signification as to the fate of Star Fox Wii U, but it's at least a glimpse of what the Great Fox will look like in HD. The planet in the background also could resemble Fichina. The main point here is that Nintendo seem to be ignoring Command entirely and appealing to fans of Assault. I'm impressed, and hopefully it could be a sign for the future.

Another point which I wanted to raise is the confirmation that alternative vehicles have been planned for input in Star Fox Wii U - specifically a helicopter. I can't imagine a helicopter being used for a flying mission, even something similar to the Fortuna sub-level in Assault's Story mode would be quite a push for a helicopter. Instead, I foresee a helicopter being used in rescue missions, like in Star Fox 64 where Slippy crashes on Titania, except requiring an on-foot escort to take the hostage back to the helicopter. This reveal of the helicopter, I believe, is the closest reveal yet to the re-announcement of on-foot sections and levels in the new game.

And that's not all - the fact that Star Fox 64/Lylat Wars ALSO contained on-foot combat in the multiplayer is perhaps a hint that the idea for on-foot was something which Miyamoto wanted to implement into SF64 but couldn't because of the mass of other content. The implementation in Assault had a mixed reception mainly due to unusual controls, so I believe that the Wii U GamePad/Classic Controller (or even a Gamecube controller with updated controls) could be the one thing that needs to be changed for a return of on-foot sections/multiplayer.

Yeah, sorry if it's not clear, but this is from Smash Bros. for Wii U, not the upcoming Star Fox game... sadly. The point is that more recognition is being given to Assault despite 64 3D and Command being released between Brawl and Smash 4, which increases the chance of a potential Assault sequel.

that's... actually impressive. Space Station, Aparoid ship and all.

it's still only acknowledgement of the singleplayer aspect of the game but that's all right to start with... multiplayer is definitely the way Nintendo is going nowadays, even if it's in a more casual atmosphere.

i still think any multiplayer is likely to be flight-based tho

but if it's more interesting competitively that could be interesting all the same

The reason I'm excited here is that if the rumoured helicopters are going to be in the game, I'd put money on having them as transport/Gears of War-style shoot-out-the-side vehicles, and that implies foot travel as well. Here's hoping, eh?

MORE SPECULATION TIME

So the new Nintendo Direct featuring Smash for Wii U was great, and it told us two very key things regarding Star Fox.

The first and most major one is Mewtwo's reveal as a DLC character. The majority of opinions I've read believe that this will not be the last DLC addition to the roster given the space available on the 3DS's character select screen and another key piece of evidence - the Yoshi's Wooly World stage confirmed to be in. Yoshi's Wooly World is not set to be out before mid summer next year. This works in possibly two ways: the first is that it builds hype for the game and so increases potential sales when it is released. This is the more likely option, but the second is that the game  could release tie-in content for new games in the Nintendo franchise. This is highly speculative but in my opinion quite possible.

What does this mean for Star Fox, then? Well, there are currently two confirmed stages representing Star Fox on Wii U - the Lylat Cruise stage from Brawl and the Orbital Gate Defence from Assault (notice that both of these stages based on Assault). In comparison the Kirby franchise also has two confirmed stages: Battleship Halberd and The Great Cave Offensive. That's 2 stages representing 3 characters for Kirby, and 2 stages representing 2 characters for Star Fox. There is more potential for Star Fox DLC here, I believe, than any other franchise represented in Smash, as we have seen a decrease or no change in numbers of character representatives for both the Pokémon and Star Fox franchises. Pokémon just got DLC, increasing its reps to 6, and Star Fox is sitting at 2 still. (Mother, I believe, won't get another rep because of its loss of relevance)

And what does THAT mean for Star Fox Wii U? Putting 2 and 2 together with the above evidence creates the likelihood that a DLC character could be revealed to tease/accompany the release of Star Fox Wii U, and the most likely candidates for this position are Wolf and Krystal. Of the two, Wolf would be the favourite as he's a veteran, but Sakurai's being harsher on clones now than he ever was before so I believe Krystal is another possible choice.

And does this mean that Star Fox Wii U will be an Assault sequel? No, but I believe that with no major characters introduced in Command memorable enough to create a Smasher out of, it will likely take an Assault character. Thus, if the character IS a teaser for SF WiiU, it will either entirely discount the endings of Command or choose a single canonical one, or take place before Command in the series timeline, increasing the likelihood of Assault reference as that was the most contemporary game in the Star Fox timeline before Command came along.

BUT OF COURSE IT'S ALL SPECULATIVE. We can't say for sure whether or not more DLC characters will arrive and whether or not it'll be a Star Fox character... but we can hope.

Well it doesn't look good, the game seems to be primarily single player focused will no sign of on foot combat at all. Multiplayer isn't even included atm and may never be.

Guess Assault is what we're stuck with.

wish i could say i was surprised - or disappointed, really. at this point it'd be hard to sway all the traditionalists (including me!) to convert to any potential SFA successor.

having no other option, let's play some Assault bounce
